Ever since I was young, I dreamt about going to the White House. I imagined roaming the same hallways as Honest Abe and JFK, sitting in the oval office, and dining with the great diplomats and dignitaries of the day (aka Backstreet Boys). But as it turns out, the White house is a very difficult place to merit an invitation- unless of course you are a musical prodigy.

Thursday, July 30th, 2009Get smart in Southern Virginia
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009Education is the foundation of today’s youth. Many young people dream about having successful careers as lawyers, doctors, or CEO’s of major corporations, but to achieve these goals they must be adequately educated.
The beginning years of teaching are the most trivial because they form a child’s base and allow students to understand more complex concepts in the future. That’s why it’s important to recognize, recently released results from the state’s standardized spring exam illustrate that elementary and middle school students in Henry County of Southern Virginia improved in 14 areas of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).

Farmers market to open on Wednesday evenings in Southern Virginia
Thursday, July 16th, 2009After a summer mostly defined by rain, thunderstorms, and humidity that could coerce even the straightest of hair into an afro, local farmers are being overwhelmed with an abundance of produce. And while local residents have been glumly tucking away their tubing gear and hanging up their river shoes, little seedlings from all over the area have been busy sprouting away.
Innovative Energy in Southern Virginia
Friday, July 10th, 2009Nowadays, companies are trying to become “green,” or more eco-friendly. You might think of automotive companies producing hybrid cars or financial businesses reducing paper usage, but if the question, “How could a dairy farming company innovatively become environmentally-friendly” comes up, you might think twice.

South Boston Farmers Market: Good For Your Community and Good For Your Allergies
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009As summertime begins to roll through our state it brings with it many of those small pleasures that we all enjoy during the season: trips to the pool, cookouts, vacations, outdoor concerts, fireflies, honey bees and…..allergies. Even if you don’t suffer from allergies personally, you probably know or live with someone who does, which, sometimes, can be as bad as having them yourself. About 1 in 10 people live with allergies and billions are spent to combat, control and study this phenomenon. I venture to wager that perhaps, for those living in or around South Boston, the solution may in your backyard, literally. All those honey bees that we keep an eye out for when we walk sans shoes are busy at work creating the stuff that may have a profound effect on local allergy sufferers, and the South Boston Farmers Market provides the stage for this duet, not only with its selection of locally grown produce, but also locally crafted goods and locally made honey.
