GOVERNOR KAINE ANNOUNCES ARRA FUNDING TO REPAIR STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT BRIDGES ACROSS VIRGINIA

~ 119 deficient bridge structures to be repaired or replaced ~

RICHMOND—Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that 119 bridges across the Commonwealth will be replaced or repaired using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has awarded seven construction contracts to replace 119 structurally deficient bridges across the state that would otherwise have gone unaddressed. The awarded contracts, totaling $50.7 million, are part of the Commonwealth’s continued efforts to invest $694.5 million in highway funding from the ARRA.

“I am very pleased that the President and Congress recognize the value of infrastructure investment and included it in the ARRA. These bridge replacements and repairs will address a significant safety issue in our transportation network and put Virginians back to work,” said Governor Kaine. “While Virginia is consistently named one of the best states for business, we must maintain our infrastructure to stay economically competitive and keep our citizens safe. No state or nation can grow out of a recession with a crumbling infrastructure, and am I very happy that these funds will provide immediate jobs and economic stimulus, as well as long term dividends for the Commonwealth.”

Farmers market to open on Wednesday evenings in Southern Virginia

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

After a summer mostly defined by rain, thunderstorms, and humidity that could coerce even the straightest of hair into an afro, local farmers are being overwhelmed with an abundance of produce. And while local residents have been glumly tucking away their tubing gear and hanging up their river shoes, little seedlings from all over the area have been busy sprouting away.

Nowadays, companies are trying to become “green,” or more eco-friendly.  You might think of automotive companies producing hybrid cars or financial businesses reducing paper usage, but if the question, “How could a dairy farming company innovatively become environmentally-friendly” comes up, you might think twice.

Danville’s Broadband Continues to Expand

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Danville is in the process of growing and expanding “one of the most sophisticated fiber optic networks in the U.S.”  While the network was initially set up in 2004 “to city buildings, schools, and government facilities…[it is now] reaching industrial parks and businesses.”

I am always happy to see an area get a better network.  I can remember back home when cable and DSL were just getting started, and I couldn’t get either where I lived.  I had to wait for the longest time with a 56k modem, while my friends would have much better Internet connections than I did.  My friend would have to use an old computer so we could play Starcraft by dialing in the other person’s modem.
