Your Pumpkin Pie Plans Could be Canned…

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

For the second year in a row, if you’re planning to buy Libby’s canned Pumpkin Pie Filling, you better go ahead and buy your supply now.

Morton, Illinois, population 16,000 is home to the Libby company which controls 80-90 percent of the nation’s pumpkin pie mix.  Last year, their 5,000 acres of pumpkins were stopped from reaching grocery store shelves because of bad weather.  This year, the abundance of rain has soaked the crop, making a large portion of the crop uneligable for harvest.  They have been harvesting 24 hours a day since September, but they said that it’s still going to be a tight squeeze to satisfy everyone’s pumpkin pie needs over the holidays.

Prices are being affected as well.  A normal 15oz. can that normally sells for around $.99 is going for about $1.59 and the 29oz. can is priced this season at $2.29.

My suggestion to you is two fold.  Either 1) go out and stock up or 2) take a breather and make things the old fashioned way; from scratch.  You might be surprised with the results.

It’s Martinsville, Man!

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Okay, so maybe that’s not the official slogan, but I’m from the place where “It’s Bristol, Baby!”  Race week is upon us and people from all over are gearing up for this weekend’s festivities!  Below, I have posted the complete schedule of events for your racing convenience.
There are always questions associated with race weekend.  Will traffic be terrible?  Most likely. Will it be cold? Probably. Will you get a sunburn despite the weather? Most Definitely.  Will it be one of the best times you’ve ever had?  No question.  If you’re lucky enough to have tickets, have fun.  If you’re not, you can drive around the block and listen to it on any number of radio stations and prentend, right?  Whatever your method of getting your race in, enjoy yourselves and be safe.

  • Civil War Renactment not to be missed!

    Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Tomorrow and Sunday is the Annual Civil War Renactment at Laurel Hill in Ararat, VA.  For those of you who don’t know, Laurel Hill is the birthplace of Major General J.E.B Stuart, CSA.  It’s an excellent little history lesson for children and adults alike and this weekend you can get a first hand feel for the sights, sounds and smells of the Civil War.

Saturday and Sunday offer battle scenes, Civil War sutlers (read battle victual suppliers), food (hopefully not hard tack…perhaps they’ll be more understanding to your 21st century palette), exhibits, Black Rose Memorial Service  which is a really neat memorial service done by the Society of the Black Rose.  Additionally, you’ll be able to see a fashion show hopefully complete with hooped skirts and woolen fashions and dance the night away to the tunes by Slate Mt. Ramblers.

It sounds like a great time to be had in Patrick County, VA.  And parents, what better way to immerse your children in history than to take them to something like this.  Renactors take their roles very seriously, so it’s an amazing learning experience!  For more information, go to www.jebstuart.org

Halifax American Belles Win World Series

    Thursday, August 27th, 2009

For the second time, the Halifax American Belles have won the Dixie Softball Belles World Series title, beating South Stanly, N.C. 10-2.

Many of the girls have been to the World Series before, but for many it was a first time win.  Says one of the girls, “I’ve been to four World Series, and this is my first title, and it feels great.  I wouldn’t trade this for anything except to come back and do it again.”

I think this is absolutely incredible!  When I was growing up, we didn’t have a girl’s softball league, so for these girls to be able to do this and go all the way, that is incredible!  Way to go American Belles!

    Get smart in Southern Virginia

    Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Education is the foundation of today’s youth. Many young people dream about having successful careers as lawyers, doctors, or CEO’s of major corporations, but to achieve these goals they must be adequately educated.

The beginning years of teaching are the most trivial because they form a child’s base and allow students to understand more complex concepts in the future. That’s why it’s important to recognize, recently released results from the state’s standardized spring exam illustrate that elementary and middle school students in Henry County of Southern Virginia improved in 14 areas of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).

South Boston Farmers Market: Good For Your Community and Good For Your Allergies

    Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

As summertime begins to roll through our state it brings with it many of those small pleasures that we all enjoy during the season:  trips to the pool, cookouts, vacations, outdoor concerts, fireflies, honey bees and…..allergies.  Even if you don’t suffer from allergies personally, you probably know or live with someone who does, which, sometimes, can be as bad as having them yourself.  About 1 in 10 people live with allergies and billions are spent to combat, control and study this phenomenon.  I venture to wager that perhaps, for those living in or around South Boston, the solution may in your backyard, literally.  All those honey bees that we keep an eye out for when we walk sans shoes are busy at work creating the stuff that may have a profound effect on local allergy sufferers, and the South Boston Farmers Market provides the stage for this duet, not only with its selection of locally grown produce, but also locally crafted goods and locally made honey. Thursday, June 25th, 2009

School is out and it’s time for children to enjoy these next couple of months filled with worry-free and lazy summer days.  So what is a great way to spend time in the summer?  Get out and play seems to be what Martinsville’s new sports complex is saying.  With the grand opening on July 1, the complex will offer fields, picnic shelters, walking trails, and a playground to the public.

New Goat Market off to a Strong Start

    Monday, June 15th, 2009

It seems there is a new smell lingering around local goat farms these days: the sweet smell of success. The newly

established Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association recently held its first goat sale on May 18th and farmers from all

across Halifax County are wildly optimistic about the future of the alliance.

The sale began at 8am, and by noon all sales had been completed and the goats were halfway to fulfilling their little goat destinies at a facility in Fredericksburg. Quality kids brought the highest selling prices while mama and papa goats casually sauntered behind, bringing the final sale to a whopping $7653 with the sale of 122 goats. (more…)

    Music to My Ears

    Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Music was always one of my favorite classes when I was in elementary school. I remember thinking I was going to be a famous drummer and banging drumsticks on my desk. However, there were so many other instruments that I never got the chance to experience.

Fortunately, Franklin County in Southern Virginia is sponsoring its first Fine Arts Camp featuring music workshops. The camp is designed to permit students to explore their interests and talents in several music areas such as steel drums, percussion, panjumbie, music theatre, stomp, taiko drums and keyboard.
