Civil War Renactment not to be missed!

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Tomorrow and Sunday is the Annual Civil War Renactment at Laurel Hill in Ararat, VA.  For those of you who don’t know, Laurel Hill is the birthplace of Major General J.E.B Stuart, CSA.  It’s an excellent little history lesson for children and adults alike and this weekend you can get a first hand feel for the sights, sounds and smells of the Civil War.

Saturday and Sunday offer battle scenes, Civil War sutlers (read battle victual suppliers), food (hopefully not hard tack…perhaps they’ll be more understanding to your 21st century palette), exhibits, Black Rose Memorial Service  which is a really neat memorial service done by the Society of the Black Rose.  Additionally, you’ll be able to see a fashion show hopefully complete with hooped skirts and woolen fashions and dance the night away to the tunes by Slate Mt. Ramblers.

It sounds like a great time to be had in Patrick County, VA.  And parents, what better way to immerse your children in history than to take them to something like this.  Renactors take their roles very seriously, so it’s an amazing learning experience!  For more information, go to www.jebstuart.org

Get smart in Southern Virginia

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Education is the foundation of today’s youth. Many young people dream about having successful careers as lawyers, doctors, or CEO’s of major corporations, but to achieve these goals they must be adequately educated.

The beginning years of teaching are the most trivial because they form a child’s base and allow students to understand more complex concepts in the future. That’s why it’s important to recognize, recently released results from the state’s standardized spring exam illustrate that elementary and middle school students in Henry County of Southern Virginia improved in 14 areas of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT).

Danville’s Broadband Continues to Expand

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Danville is in the process of growing and expanding “one of the most sophisticated fiber optic networks in the U.S.”  While the network was initially set up in 2004 “to city buildings, schools, and government facilities…[it is now] reaching industrial parks and businesses.”

I am always happy to see an area get a better network.  I can remember back home when cable and DSL were just getting started, and I couldn’t get either where I lived.  I had to wait for the longest time with a 56k modem, while my friends would have much better Internet connections than I did.  My friend would have to use an old computer so we could play Starcraft by dialing in the other person’s modem. Finding a Job in the Midst of a Recession

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Despite the hope of a new administration, we can’t ignore the downward-spiraling recession and glaring unemployment rates that splash the headlines each morning. For the currently employed, this evokes fear of layoffs and downsizing. But what does the economy mean for job seekers?

All hope is not lost. There are plenty of opportunities out there – it’s just a matter of where to look, and how to sell yourself to an employer. Throughout the next few weeks I will be providing advice to job seekers interested in opportunities in Southwest Virginia, including resume and interview tips, dressing for success, etc.  (more…)
